Politics, social practice instead of theatre?

THEATERFORMEN 2004/REpublicACTION is organizing an international workshop in Brunswick from the 6th-10th of June, 2004. It will deal with the appropriation and classification of the notion of the global which is understood as a social and creative power manifesting the diversity of productive practices. It will centre mainly on the question as to whether a turn towards the political - as has been happening in other arts and media in recent years - can also be carried over to the field of theatre.

LECTURERS AND PARTICIPANTS:

Franco Bifo Berardi, philosopher from Bologna. Author of several books about media theory and activism, co-founder of the journal A/traverso, the radio station Alice and the street television project Orfeo TV. http://www.rekombinant.org

Xavier Le Roy, choreographer, Berlin

Eran Sachs, musician, composer and curator from Jerusalem
More...

Mårten Spångberg, dramaturge, performer, journalist, Germany/Sweden

Wolfgang Zinggl, co-founder of Wochenklausur Vienna http://www.wochenklausur.t0.or.at

The workshop is conceived and led by Florian Schneider, filmmaker and author from Munich, initiator of various networks and campaigns at the interfaces between art, new media and political activism. http://www.kein.org

The workshop will take place in English. The fee is € 50 - including 4 performances in the context of REpublicACTION as well as two lectures by Zygmunt Baumann and Slavoj  Žižek.

The general structure of the workshop is shaped as a loop of dialogs and debates perforating the borders of a professional theatre discourse, expanding it towards related issues in other art forms, and short-circuiting it with emerging notions of social praxis and the political.

Besides the radically theoretical approach there is a specific focus on the practical work of presenting, documenting, performing and experimenting in real time and by any media necessary.

The workshop tries to investigate actual experiences, open questions and challenges on four imperative layers:

DISPLAY!

Serial interfaces of social praxis refer to the failures of spectacle and representation. Apparently both make no sense in times of hyper-alienation. What does acting mean actually? How does actualization make a difference? What is repeatable, reproducable, remixable?

LOCATE!

While silencing the real non-places are rendered by the noise of the virtual. What about inclusion and exclusion? What ever happened to the borders between inside and outside? What is the current political and esthetical impact of mobility and freedom of movement?

TAKE STANCE!

Not cherishing the illusions of naturalism demands the research and differentiation of attitudes, mindsets and subjectivities. What is the the meaning of autonomy, what are the ethics of self-organization? How do they interfere with political rights management and may create a creative commons?

COLLABORATE!

The power of affect reaches out way beyond the usual patterns of moral formation, agitation and entertainment. Is there a life after spectacle and life-long learning? How do knowledge, skills, and ressources get distributed in networking environments?
